"Goodbye 2009" Flipnotes from the Europe and Oceania region:

★ A cat enjoys the celebrations for the new year in this Flipnote by Katana (id:KATANAs4n). We don't have any cats in the Hatena offices, but the honorary chairman of Hatena is a dog named Cinammon.

★ 2009 gets deleted in this cool Flipnote by moigus193m (id:moigus193m). Nice use of sprites, and we liked the fireworks too.

★ The fireworks to welcome 2010 continue in this colorful Flipnote by Rafaela (iid:Svenja-Rafaela). Good job!

★ This Flipnote by Simone (id:Skeptomai) features a hungry monster that eats time, then transforms into a clock. The Flipnote ends with fireworks to welcome the new year (Are fireworks a recurring theme for this week?!?)

★ Cats welcome in the new year in this cute Flipnote by x__iDz'__× (id:piixa). We especially liked the cat font used by this creator! (Cats seems to be a recurring theme for this week too)

"Goodbye 2009" Flipnotes from the Americas region:

★ Melanie (id:Saint-Athena) made a short Flipnote with a character waving goodbye to 2009. This was a nice, subtle way to approach the weekly topic. Good work, and wishing you a happy new year!

Weekly Frog Sighting

If you are interested in having your frog photo featured in the "Weekly Frog Sighting" section of the blog you can post it on Hatena Haiku (post to the keyword "Frog Sightings") and we'll choose the best ones and feature them here.

Please submit only original photos/illustrations that you have created yourself.

This week's frog sighting is one by myself (id:aaron). Usually I am busy translating the Hatena website into English, or answering your emails, but I also enjoy taking photos during my free time.

A few days ago I went to visit Mt. Tsukuba, located in Ibaraki prefecture in Japan. It's about 4 hours by train from the Hatena offices in Kyoto. Mt. Tsukuba is famous for being one of the highest mountains in Japan, and also for having frogs with 4 fingers on their front legs, and 6 toes on their hind legs.

I was very excited to check out these frogs and take some photos for the "Frog Sightings" section. Unfortunately, once I got to Mt. Tsukuba, I couldn't find these unique frogs anywhere. Some local people I spoke with told me that all of the frogs were hibernating for the winter.

Luckily, there were a variety of frog related items in the gift shops so I took a few pictures which you can find below.

This restaurant sign featured a frog eating some noodles.

Frogs everywhere, but they were all made of ceramic!
