Hello from all of us on the Flipnote Hatena team in Kyoto, Japan, and thanks for checking out the weekly news blog.

This past Monday we released the Color Star Exchange which is a new feature of Flipnote Hatena that allows you to exchange color stars that you have for new themes for your Creator's Room.

We hope that you're enjoying this new feature of Flipnote Hatena, and that you've found some themes that you like.

Here are some little known facts about the Creator's Room themes:

  • Creator's Room themes that you exchange color stars for will also be displayed on the Flipnote Hatena mobile site. If anyone views your Creator's Room from the Nintendo DSi Browser or from an iPhone/iPod touch or other mobile device, they can see your current theme displayed there too. For example, see the picture below of my Creator's Room when viewed with the Nintendo DSi Browser:

  • You can also access the Color Star Exchange from the Flipnote Hatena mobile site with the Nintendo DSi Browser or from an iPhone/iPod touch, or other mobile device and exchange color stars for themes there too.

  • Almost all of the themes in the Color Star Exchange were created by one designer, id:chira_rhythm55, who is the lead designer on the Flipnote team. It takes about one full day to create a new theme from concept to completion. The themes take a long time to make because each of them requires 6 different versions to support every language on Flipnote Hatena (English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish). So far, id:chira_rhythm55 has created 33 different Creator's Room themes, and is working hard everyday to create more.

This week's new themes

We released two new themes in the Color Star Exchange today that we hope you'll like.

  • The first new theme for this week features several cute characters based on sweets. Add some sugar to your Creator's Room!
  • The second new theme for this week features a spacecraft traveling in outer space. Bring the cosmos into your Creator's Room!

This week's topic: "Insects"

For this week's topic we'd like you to create Flipnotes about bugs, insects and other creepy-crawly things. Did you know that there are more than 800,000 different kinds of insects in the world? Bring some insects to life in your Flipnotes this week and share your bugs with the world. Those of you with Entomophobia please accept our apologies, and try to avoid watching channel 8 this week.

Here are some insect videos to give you some inspiration for this week's topic:

  • The film "Mothlight" by Stan Brakhage (1963) is a unique experimental film that was made with insects. "Mothlight" was created by collecting hundreds of moth wings and attaching them directly onto onto 16mm film with clear tape. The result is something amazing!

  • Check out this video of the Trilobite Beetle of Laos, which is a truly amazing little critter!

Post the "Insect" Flipnotes you create to channel 8 from Flipnote Hatena on your Nintendo DSi. We're looking forward to seeing your stuff, and will feature some of the best ones next week here in the Flipnote Hatena Weekly News blog.
