Welcome to the Hatena Featured Artist section of our blog, where we introduce Flipnote creators from around the world.

We post the Hatena Featured Artist every week on Wednesday, and hope to introduce a variety of different artists that will inspire and entertain you.

Be sure to check here every week to see some of the most amazing artists on Flipnote Hatena. Maybe we'll even feature you someday!

Today's Hatena Featured Artist is Mafuripa (id:kensukesan) from Japan.

Please tell us about yourself.

Hi, my name is Mafuripa. "Ma" stands for "mama", "fu" and "ri" are the first syllables of my children's names, and "pa" stands for "papa". We make Flipnotes together as a family. For this reason you might find that our Flipnotes are different from each other, but most of them are created by our father, who's actually involved in the art field for his profession.

What are your interests or hobbies, and how do you spend your free time?

In our house we have a pet Polypterus, that is a very cool looking fish. He is our greatest interest right now, and is also kind of cute.

On the weekends, we usually play video games, watch movies, or do some drawing together. We enjoy spending time together as a family.

Please introduce 3 of your favorite Flipnotes, and explain why you like them.

★"The Chaser and the Runner"

This was made when we just started playing with Flipnote Studio. I used some dramatic camera work in it, which made it more interesting and exciting. The end result is very dynamic, and I consider this as my best work.

★ "Heart Bomb"

This is one of my favorite Flipnotes, with many small details and dynamic lines. I tried to change the camera work while adding movement in various places. I also think that the story is cute.

★ "Halloween"

My daughter made this Flipnote. It might not be so good, but considering that she is only 10 years old, I think it's a masterpiece. She used to mock my techniques when she dew, but one day, she suddenly started creating on her own by using her imagination. This was a big surprise to me, and I love her work!

What techniques or skills are you especially good at in your Flipnotes?

I always try to draw interesting movements, and I think I'm fairly good at it. Maybe it's because I practice a lot with Flipnote Studio.

What are some techniques or skills that you wish to improve, try, or learn to do in order to make your Flipnotes better?

I'd like to draw more neatly, especially for my characters faces. I'm not very good at subtle movements, so I tend to make more dynamic movements. I really admire animation that is drawn by hand, and hope to practice and improve my skills.

Please introduce some of your favorite Flipnote artists.

Raijin has been my favorite artist since I started using Flipnote Hatena. He hasn't been creating Flipnotes these days, but he is really good at drawing motion. In his Flipnotes the characters and camera moves a lot. Raijin's Flipnotes introduced me to how much you can do with Flipnotes.

Shu (id:sister-339) is also one of the artists that I like. I'm always curious about what she is trying to create. She seems to be practicing a lot of small moves, and it is interesting to watch her progress.

Is there something you would like to say to the Flipnote Hatena community?

I just think that Flipnote Hatena is awesome. You can easily create animation just like making flipbooks in the corners of your textbooks! It is easy for anyone to make a Flipnote, and I am looking forward to seeing more and more talented creators coming out.

Some of Hatena's favorite Flipnotes by this artist

★ "Dragon" by Mafuripa (id:kensukesan)

We were really impressed by the varied use of line and smooth motion, as well as the detail of the characters in this Flipnote.

★ "Doki Doki" by Mafuripa (id:kensukesan)

"Doki Doki" is literally translated into English as "Thump Thump" (like the sound of a beating heart), and means to be excited or nervous. The funny movements of the cute character in this Flipnote make it really special.

★ "Confusion and Chaos" by Mafuripa (id:kensukesan)

Mafuripa made several versions of this Flipnote, but the surreal character and other added details in this one made this one of our favorites.

★ "Rescue" by Mafuripa (id:kensukesan)

The camerawork and dramatic movement in this Flipnote is truly impressive, and the story is excellent too.
